WASHINGTON (AP) — Brushless electric cars are becoming more common, but they’re still a minority, according to a new survey.
The National Motor Carrier Survey found that 38% of Americans said they’d use a brushless car washing machine for home use, while only 16% said they wouldn’t.
The survey was conducted online by Lexus, Ford, Tesla and Honda.
The poll also found that Americans are more likely to trust electric cars to handle washing their cars than to trust traditional manual washing machines.
Nearly one-third of Americans, 33%, said they trust electric vehicles to wash their cars.
But nearly half, 46%, said that they wouldn’st trust them to wash the vehicle.
About 7% of people said they would pay for a brushlike machine to wash electric cars, while nearly 2% said that was a good deal.
“We see a lot of people coming in who aren’t really into electric cars,” said Richard Geddes, director of research for Lexus.
“They’re just looking for something that’s convenient.
And the brushless option is just a great one for them.”
More than 1 in 5 Americans said the technology of brushing cars could be improved.
But more than a third of Americans (33%) said they couldn’t get by with a brush.
“The problem is that we have a very expensive and difficult problem of washing cars,” Geddis said.
“We’re not doing a very good job of it.”
Ford, Tesla, Ford’s and Toyota all have brushes, but not nearly enough to replace traditional manual ones.
A new electric Ford Focus EV that can be powered by electricity has been shown to be much more efficient at washing electric cars.
Lexus says its Focus EV has the highest cleaning efficiency among electric cars at 84.5%.
Tesla’s Bolt EV has a rating of 87.5%, and Ford’s Focus EV and its Bolt EV each have 85% and 88% cleaning efficiency.
Geddes said the high cleaning efficiency is a big reason why the technology is still a rarity.
“When you talk about a clean car, you don’t want it to be an expensive car, so you want to make sure you have an affordable alternative,” he said.
“You want to be able to do things that are convenient and cost less than a conventional car.
It’s not an easy thing to do, but we’ve been able to achieve those results.”
